From the Garden
Thoughts on gardening from a new gardener
Thanks for visiting From the Garden.
I started From the Garden to record my first experience gardening, hoping to encourage tentative would-be gardeners to try it out themselves. But more than that, it’s become a space for reflection on a broad range of gardening-inspired topics, thoughts about our relationship with Nature, art, meaning, and ourselves.
I used to think gardening was wrestling with nature: chemicals in the soil, tidy boxes and straight lines, hours in the sun pulling weeds… just another of the many ways that humans try to force Nature to serve them. It didn’t appeal to me.
But when I decided to try it anyway, I discovered was something the seasoned gardener will already know.
Gardening is essentially a long conversation with Nature. And it’s an incredibly enlightening one.
It’s about listening and responding to the earth rather than imposing on it. Finding your place in Nature’s intricate cyclical systems and a home in its equilibrium. Acquiring an intuition for what the earth needs, how it will respond, what it will say next.
Through this experience, I found I was struck with new ideas on a broad range of topics related to Nature, art, and meaning- ideas that I hope will be helpful to you.
In Conversations with Nature you’ll find garden-inspired observations about how we relate to Nature, art, and ourselves.
If you’re brand new to gardening as I was when I began this site: I’ve put together a quick, easy First Garden Handbook – a practical guide to starting your first garden the simple, natural way.
I hope you’ll find some inspiration here.
